The family went on another camping trip in late September, 2002 to Rock Creek Reservoir.  It's pretty much the last time you can go to any of the drive-up state run parks.  In fact, the one I had been to earlier in the season closed just 1 week prior.

I was pretty excited to take the kids to a more rustic campground than Fort Stevens, but it turned out to be a mediocre experience in the end.  The big trouble was the bees.  Lots of them.  And while it didn't affect us materially, the reservoir was almost totally dried up.  I was told they were draining it, but I didn't expect it to be a small puddle just yet.  I paid for a premium campsite, paid the fees associated with reserving online (because I didn't want to risk a first-come, first-served attempt) and in the end, I probably didn't have to.  There was no one on site at all... they left about a week prior.  (Learned that from the bathroom cleaning log, unfortunately.)  No wood... nothing.  I did bring some of those firelogs, but it turns out they put off a soot that makes them impossible to cook over.  Ah well.  Next time, I'll go earlier in the season.

This was our campsite.  It was pretty nice and had a great view to the reservoir (if it wasn't drained).

After dinner, we all enjoyed some s'mores.

Still eating s'mores and watching our nice fire!

Off in the distance, you can see the tip of Mt. Hood.  We were at about 3,500 feet elevation.

A little camera zoom and we can see it much better.

You can see Jarod and Patrick exploring towards the reservoir.
